Ella

Oooh my lovely Ella, I deeply miss your chilly temperatures, your attractions, your hiking possibilities and your night life!
You got the most beautiful and chilled bars with the best music and the strongest drinks!
But never drinking too much alcohol, because no one enjoys being hungover while discovering the beautiful landscape around you the next day – except some weird fetishists maybe :D
No but seriously, there´s no better place to go hiking than in Ella.
I did the two hours tour to “Ella Rock” on my first day there, and sweating my ass off to get there was totally worth it! Sitting on top of the rock, one can see everything around, and it´s impossible to decide in which direction to turn the head – because literally everything is just gorgeous.
At parts, he way up was a bit tricky to find, but there´s a Coconut seller or a small café from time to time, where the people know the way. Most of the time. They might also just send you into the Nirvana. Gaaah.
Easier to find but harder to reach were the Diyaluma Waterfalls, about 20km away from Ella, in the direction of Wellawaya.
I rent a scooter with a girl from my hostel and the one-hour ride to the waterfalls was already worth it! We were driving extra slowly to see all the beauty nature beheld around us and stopped at the smaller Ravana Falls on the way.
The Diyaluma waterfalls themselves consist of four “pools”, in which we went swimming (finally cold water!!) and its total height of 220m allows a beautiful view over…well…everything. Some crazy dudes even decided to jump from one pool into another, which would have meant a 7meter jump into shallow water… Thank you, but no thank you!
I really had to hold my shit together, since being afraid of heights and standing on the edge of a super high waterfall isn´t the best combination one could imagine lol.
But to be honest, you dot even have to leave Ella to get a nice view – we had a pretty amazing sight from the terrace of our Hostel (Ella Rock Hostel)! That was the nicest part of the hostel bc the rest was really shit to be honest, but rather having a view than nothing at all :)
What else is there to say about Ella… It´s a very touristy place, so there´s plenty of little souvenir shops along the main road and on the way to the 9-Arch-Bridge.
The bridge itself is located around 15 minutes walking-distance from the city and there’s sooo many tourists there, which makes it almost impossible to get a good shot of it!
But yeah, it´s a bridge and even though it´s a pretty one, it was the most unspectacular part of my tour there ^^
Another attraction there is “Adams Peak”, which I myself didn´t hike to, but many other backpackers described it as a hard walk but worth the view from the top – similar to the one from Ella Rock I guess.
Honestly, whatever you do in Sri Lanka and wherever you decide to go- don´t skip Ella!!!
