Chumpon
Since me and my mon had the brilliant idea to travel from south to north, we had to make a few stops in between. One of them was Chumpon. We now kinda understand why no one but us does that – there´s literally nothing here!
And we were wondering why there´s almost no hotels here, haha…
Experiencing the so called “nothing” was great tho. Actually the greatest thing since arriving in Thailand.
We´re only surrounded by locals who barely spoke any English, so communication had to happen by hand, feet and weird sounds you can make with your mouth. E.g. a chicken´s typical “booook boook”, to show the soup seller that we don´t want meat in our dinner. Imitating a fish was harder tho, and the man didn´t really get what we wanted (how can anyone survive without meat? Or fish?? "But crabs ok, ok?"). We eventually went to his kitchen and showed him what we want and what not, was a tough but fun time getting that dinner :D
We´re honestly asking ourselves now why no one goes to Chumphon, because that place is nothing but beautiful.
The nature is simply stunning and there´s so many diversions in vegetation, I don´t think that anyone has words to describe that place! Some of the beaches there look like the typical post card motive - but better.
The only sounds you can hear are the sounds of nature: knocking coconuts on sand. Crickets and frogs having their concerts from dusk till dawn. No cars. Few people. And whoever you meet wears the most heartwarming and opening smile imaginable on their face. Chumpon really is a province that lets Thailand deserve its name of the “smiling country”!
True, it would be completely different with more tourists, and I´m wondering what that city is gonna look like in a few years, within which the tourism industry will probably have taken over the "nothingness" and turn it more into a place like Krabi town or Railay... I´m glad I went there before that!
But what to do here, in a lost place without tourism?
Experience the kindness of the people. Rent a bike (for free tho). Get a puncture in your wheel. Just ask anyone for help. Everyone is gonna try their best in helping you out.
Or try eating a watermelon for breakfast. Without a knife. Someone´s gonna get you one within five seconds!
Chumphon definitively isn´t a place for everyone and if you´re into party, organization and other foreigners, you should really skip that.
But if you´re open minded and in search for a local and different experience, love it basic and native and if you don´t mind travelling for kilometers by bike without seeing a single house, this is your place to be!
